Van der Veer, the chief executive of Royal Dutch Petroleum, faces an egm in Amsterdam today where he hopes to clinch the £130billion merger of Royal Dutch Petroleum with Shell Transport and Trading.

The merger would bring to an end almost 100 years of Shell's trading as a dual organisation.

The company is keen to usher in an era of "one company, one board and one chief executive".

Critics say the move will leave 3,000 Royal Dutch Petroleum UK holders with a £77m tax bill.
