A local company plans to raise money for a fund for the families of military personnel who have died in the line of duty.

First Coast Energy Shell, a local company that owns most of the Shell stations in Northeast Florida, aims to raise $75,000 for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which provides unrestricted grants to the families of military personnel.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, 49 military men and women from Florida have died, including four from Jacksonville. The money provides gifts of $10,000 to each dependent family and an additional $5,000 per child.

First Coast Energy Shell will donate a portion of the proceeds from each gallon of gas sold at its nearly 80 local Shell stations from June 21 through July 16. The stations will also accept monetary donations from the community and sell commemorative T-shirts, with the proceeds going to the fund.

"The military is such an important part of our community," said Aubrey Edge, president and CEO of First Coast Energy Shell. "This is a great opportunity to show our support and to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf."
